People who do not eat animals of any form are said to follow the practise of vegetarianism. Certain vegetarians do not eat dairy goods and or eggs but other vegetarians do. Although they do not eat animal flesh there is no standard vegetarian diet. A varied diet is recommended for vegetarians, as it is for meat eaters, to contain fats, proteins and vitamins. The earliest vegetarians mentioned in records would have populated ancient India and ancient Greece. These records date back as far as the 6th century B.C. For a period during the Roman Empire vegetarianism in Europe nearly disappeared completely. It recovered during the period of the renaissance. The first Vegetarian Society was founded in England in 1847 other countries including Germany and the Netherlands followed. This was followed in 1908 by the International Vegetarian Union which is a union of the national societies. Vegetarians represent an increasingly large minority in the United States. Beyond enjoyment of vegetarian dishes there are many other factors causing vegetarianism to be embraced these could include social, ethical and religious. Vegetarianism is considered a vital part of the teaching of both Hinduism and Jainism. Meat and its production it can be argued are wasteful for the food value it creates. Certain vegetarian prefer the taste of vegetarian food or do not like the taste of meat. As there are many kinds of vegetarian food the vegetarian diet can be very different depending on the vegetarian in question. Lifestyle options can be made by vegetarians with some opting to eat high fibre and low fat dishes. Fast food in the form of bean burritos and soy cheese pizzas can be part of some vegetarian diets. Food for vegetarians is readily available in a large selection of the world's countries. In India this might include raitas, rasam, bengain bharta and jalfrezis. Ethiopia has an array of dishes of which the best known are probably hummus and couscous. China and other far-Eastern countries have vegetarian dishes based on mushroom, noodles, eggplant, string beans, broccoli, rice, tofu and/or mixed vegetables. The cooking will have started in India, china or other far away lands but you can try it now.There are enough different recipes that there is plenty of scope for change while keeping to a balanced diet. Give yourself some variety and select a different dish to try in the very near future. See that vegetarian cuisine has endless possibilities and never feel the need of having to add meat to your diet.
