Rotator Cuff Strengthening The rotator cuff is an important part of the shoulder that is crucial to continued flexibility in that part of the body, but it is also very easily damaged. When a rotator cuff is subjected to strenuous use without a prior warm up then injury is often the result. An injured rotator cuff can be extremely painful and it does not function as well as it should and if you want to restore it to its former healthy state then the best advice is to get started on rotator cuff strengthening exercises. The rotator cuff is a set of muscles and tendons that are essential to the proper functioning of your shoulder. The shoulder is one of the most flexible aspects of the human body and allows the movement of your arms in different directions. In order for the shoulder to work as it should it needs to be kept as flexible as possible. However, the shoulder is also easily injured and this reduces flexibility and increases the risk of further injury. If you want to avoid the pain and inconvenience of a stiff shoulder and a lot of pain then you should undertake some gentle rotator cuff strengthening exercises. Everyone needs to look after their body if they want to keep moving and avoid premature aging. Rotator cuff strengthening exercises are focussed on improving the flexibility and strength of the set of muscles that make up the rotator cuff. The strengthening exercises are very similar to the exercises that are used for healing an injured rotator cuff. One of the most regularly used and simple strengthening exercises, begins with the whichever is the weakest shoulder and consists of the following: • Pick up a small weight • Bend your arm to a ninety degree angle • Keep your arm close to your body – this is an important aspect of the strengthening exercise. • Keeping the weight in your hand move your arm out to the side of your body – while keeping your arm and elbow in the same position. • Once you have moved your arm up, swing it back slowly into the position you started from. The movements contained within this exercise activate the four rotator cuff muscles, done as part of your exercise routine will help to increase the strength and flexibility of those muscles. The more you engage in rotator cuff strengthening exercises the less likely you are to end up with torn muscles and an injured shoulder. This particular group of muscles are very susceptible to injury, the effects of which can last for a long time, they can also come back again unless you take proper care and do the strengthening exercises. You should look after this important group of muscles and do some strengthening exercises, even if you are not involved in sports or regular strenuous exercises. Taking care of the rotator cuff now will save you from a lot of problems later on.
